Stories:
I decided to add a recipe from "Granny Maude" Maude Ethal Pilkenton, it's a recipe for her Gingersnaps.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 beaten egg
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves (ground)
1 teaspoon ginger

Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar, add molasses and egg; beat well. Sift dry ingredients, add to creamed mixture and mix well. Roll in small balls, dip tops in course sugar place 2″ a part on greased cookie sheet then cook 375 degrees for 12 to 14 min. Makes 4 doz.

Texture:
At the time that this food became important to my family ginger was hard to come by. This food started its importance due to Granny Maude (my great grandmother.) Gingersnaps were her favorite cookies and she always had them at her house. She wasn’t much of a cook but she did know how to buy so she never ran out. In any other circumstance they wouldn’t have been passed down but her husband had died and she hated living in retirement homes. My grandmother had a stable behind her house in Gainesville and in order to let Granny Maude live on her own but still have assistance they gutted the stable and turned it into a cottage where Granny Maude could live. My mother remembers how Granny Maude would always give her gingersnaps whether she was in trouble and wanted to get away, or just an after piano practice snack. When Mom was little she hated them but as she grew older she grew fonder of them she even loves them now.
